In 2005 the California Energy Commission estimated water related
energy consumption at 19% of California's total energy
consumption. Energy is required to transport, treat, cool and heart
water throughout the state. Under the Clean Water Act, energy
consumption is expected to increase.
In a recent study conducted by the National Resource Defense
Council, it was determined that water conservation is one of the
most effective tools in reducing large scale energy consumption.
The California Water Project is the single largest user of
energy in California, consuming between 2 to 3% of the
total energy consumption in the state.
6.5% of total energy consumption in California is used to in
the transport of water
The energy used to deliver water to Southern California, is
equal to that of 1/3 of the total households in Southern
California.
The Wheeler Ridge Pumping Station moves water more than
2,000 ft. over the Tehachapi Mountains.
90% of all energy used on farms is used for irrigation.
Water conservation strategies can reduce energy
consumption up to 25%.
Landscape water is 40%-50% of residential water
consumption in California.
95% of energy efficiency goals can be met with water
efficiency programs at 58% of the cost

Landscaping irrigation alone accounts for approximately 40%
- 50% of residential water use. There are many ways to
conserve water outdoors, including xeriscaping, installing
rain/moisture sensors on your irrigation system, fixing system
leaks, and harvesting rainwater for use in your yard.
When using a hose, use a nozzle that stops
the flow of water when the handle is released.
Schedule watering for early or late in the day,
to reduce evaporation.
Replace existing potted plants with low-water
use plants.
Sweep driveways and sidewalks with a broom
instead of hosing them off.
Apply a thick layer of mulch around plants to
reduce evaporation and weed suppression.
Wash company vehicles at a commercial car
wash where they recycle the wash water.
Landscape to Save Water
By implementing these simple strategies, property
managers, governmental agencies and businesses can
reduce water and energy consumption immediately.
